You don't need to clear our visit with the hospital ahead of time, but the number of visitors allowed at the bedside changes from unit to unit. If your loved one is in the ICU or another restricted area, a quick call to the nurses' station first can save everyone a trip.

What the Patient Will Need
The person signing needs a government-issued photo ID that is current, or was issued within the past five years; a California driver's license or ID card, a U.S. or foreign passport, or a military ID all work. If their wallet went missing during admission (it happens more often than you'd think), California law lets us confirm identity through credible witnesses who personally know the patient and bring their own ID. A wallet that is safe at home does not qualify — someone needs to bring it in.
The patient also has to be awake, aware of what they're signing, and able to tell us in their own words that they want to sign it. We can't notarize for someone who is sedated or unable to communicate, but if you're not sure whether your situation qualifies, call and describe it, and we'll give you a straight answer before anyone drives out.
