No β this is the most important rule. Do not sign your documents before the notary arrives. The notary must personally witness your signature to perform a valid notarization. If you sign beforehand, the notary cannot notarize the document and your appointment will need to be rescheduled.

You'll need a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a California driver's license or ID card, U.S. passport, U.S. military ID, or foreign passport. The ID must be current β expired IDs cannot be accepted under California notary law.
