That's often when a durable power of attorney or an advance healthcare directive needs to be signed quickly, while the patient can still say, clearly, what they want.
We come to the room. Parking is free in the on-site garage and the surrounding lots; the spaces nearest the ER are held for emergency patients, so for a planned visit the garage is the place to aim for.
General visiting hours run about 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but the ICU and the Family Birth Center set their own visitor limits, and those can change. If your loved one is in one of those units, a quick call to the nurses' station before we head over is the safest bet. You don't need to clear our visit with anyone at the hospital first; we just work around whatever the unit allows.

What the Patient Will Need
The person signing needs a government-issued photo ID that is current, or was issued within the past five years: a California driver's license or ID card, a U.S. or foreign passport, or a military ID. When someone arrives through the ER the ID is often still at home. Have someone bring it in if they can: California only allows the credible witness route when the patient has no ID to present at all.
The patient also needs to be awake, aware of what the document says, and able to tell us in their own words that they want to sign. We can't notarize for someone who is sedated or unresponsive.
